A barrel of Brent cost €95.74 in euros and CHF 87.76 in Swiss francs on 3 Nov 2026, the most recent trading day in the US Energy Information Administration's spot series, converted at the European Central Bank's reference rates of 1.1179 dollars per euro and 0.9166 francs per euro; in dollars it cost $107.03. Per litre that is 60.2 cents/l, or €60.22 per 100 litres, the unit in which heating oil is sold across much of Europe. In October 2026 Brent averaged €110.64 in euros, the second-highest month since the euro was introduced, behind June 2022 (€116.20). The central finding: in euros, the 2026 peak of €120.72 on 2 Oct 2026 remains below the June 2022 peak of €122.85, although the dollar price was higher in 2026, because the euro bought only 1.0455 dollars in June 2022 and 1.1225 on the 2026 peak day.

1. What does a barrel of Brent cost in euros and francs today?

On 3 Nov 2026 Brent cost €95.74 a barrel in euros and CHF 87.76 in Swiss francs: the EIA spot price of $107.03 divided by the ECB reference rate of 1.1179 dollars per euro gives 95.74 euros, and that figure multiplied by 0.9166 francs per euro gives 87.76 francs, by our own calculation. That is −€14.90 against the October 2026 average of €110.64. In the week to 30 Oct 2026 Brent averaged €108.62 in euros and CHF 100.25 in francs; in the last full week before the war, the week to 27 Feb 2026, it averaged €60.51 and CHF 55.23.

The chart carries three lines for one commodity. The dollar line is the world market quote, explained under Brent and, for why oil is priced in dollars, under petrodollar. The euro line is what a refinery in the euro area pays once it has bought the dollars; the franc line is the same for Switzerland. When the euro weakens, the euro price rises faster than the dollar price; when it strengthens, as between the 2022 and 2026 peaks, the euro price lags. On 3 Nov 2026 the euro price was 10.5% below the dollar figure simply because one euro bought more than one dollar.

Why Brent and not WTI? European refineries buy crude priced against Brent, and the two benchmarks have drifted far apart in 2026; see Brent–WTI spread. Current quotes are on oil price today.

2. Is the oil price in euros at a record, and why is 2026 still below 2022?

No. The highest Brent price in euros since 4 Jan 1999 remains €122.85 on 13 Jun 2022; the 2026 peak of €120.72 on 2 Oct 2026 is €2.13 lower and ranks fifth among all trading days, behind four days from 2022. The reason is the exchange rate. On 13 Jun 2022 the euro bought only 1.0455 dollars, so a dollar price below the 2022 dollar peak of $133.18 (8 Mar 2022) still produced €122.85 in euros. On 2 Oct 2026 the euro bought 1.1225 dollars, 7.4% more. The 2026 dollar peak of $138.21 on 7 Apr 2026 would have been worth €132.20 at the 2022 rate. The table shows each year's euro peak day with the dollar price and rate of that day.

The monthly record tells the same story. June 2022 at €116.20 is the highest month in euros, October 2026 at €110.64 the second, July 2022 at €109.94 the third; the fifth-ranked month, March 2022 at €106.43, also dates from 2022. In dollars, October 2026 at $123.93 ranks fourth behind July 2008 ($132.72), and the all-time dollar day is still 3 Jul 2008 at $143.95. For Switzerland the ranking differs again: the franc has appreciated so much since 2008 that the franc record of CHF 146.96 on 11 Jul 2008 stands CHF 34.95 above the 2026 franc peak of CHF 112.02, and the 2022 franc peak of CHF 127.46 was CHF 15.44 higher; the highest franc month is June 2008 at CHF 137.30.

The long chart shows the mechanism: in 2008, with the euro at 1.5835 dollars on the euro peak day, the dollar peak of $143.95 (3 Jul 2008) gave a euro peak of only €90.74 (11 Jul 2008); 2012, with a weaker euro, produced €98.14 from lower dollar prices. The latest euro value stands at the 97.0th percentile of all trading days since 4 Jan 1999; the lowest month was February 1999 at €9.17. Records refer to our own calculation from EIA spot prices and ECB reference rates. The yearly table runs from 2005.

3. How is the Brent price converted into euros, francs and litres?

Brent in euros per barrel = Brent spot price in dollars ÷ ECB reference rate (dollars per euro); Brent in francs = the euro price × ECB reference rate (francs per euro); price per litre = price per barrel ÷ 158.987, the number of litres in a barrel. For 3 Nov 2026: $107.03 ÷ 1.1179 = €95.74; × 0.9166 = CHF 87.76; and €95.74 ÷ 158.987 litres = 60.2 cents/l, or €60.22 per 100 litres. The CSV repeats the calculation for every trading day with both an EIA price and an ECB rate.

Three points of method. The ECB publishes one reference rate per working day and the EIA spot price is an end-of-day US assessment, so the two are not simultaneous; the difference matters little for daily values. Days on which either series is missing are dropped. The franc series is derived through the euro, as the ECB publishes it. Weekly, monthly and yearly values are averages of the daily results.

4. How has Brent in euros moved month by month in 2026?

Brent averaged €56.73 a barrel in euros in January 2026 and €59.95 in February, rose to €89.28 in March and €100.23 in April, fell back to €73.36 in July, and then climbed to €99.19 in September and €110.64 in October, the year's highest month. April, with Brent at $117.29 and the euro at 1.1706 dollars, was the first peak; the euro price then fell by €26.87 to July before the second rise, which added €11.45 between September and October. The franc series followed at a lower level: CHF 92.35 in April, CHF 102.69 in October.

The table shows the exchange rate at work. Between April and October the dollar price rose while the euro weakened from 1.1706 to 1.1202 dollars, so the euro price rose by more than the dollar price in proportion; the franc, at 0.9282 per euro in October against 0.9213 in April, added a little more for Swiss buyers. For the year to date, Brent averages €83.48 in euros, 13.0% below the 2022 average of €95.97, while in dollars the 2026 average of $96.36 is only 4.5% below 2022 ($100.93). The constant-dollar view is on inflation-adjusted oil price; the episodes are compared on oil shocks compared.

5. What does the euro and franc oil price mean for heating oil and fuel bills?

At €95.74 a barrel, every 100 litres of fuel delivered in the euro area contains €60.22 worth of crude before refining, distribution and tax; in the week to 27 Feb 2026 that was €38.06, so the crude content alone has added €22.16 per 100 litres since the war began. For Swiss households the figures are CHF 55.20 against CHF 34.74, a rise of CHF 20.46; on the October 2026 average the crude content was €69.59 in euros and CHF 64.59 in francs. These are not heating oil prices: the delivered price adds the refining margin, at record levels in 2026 (see diesel crack spread), the dealer's margin, delivery, and taxes and levies that differ by country. This page isolates the crude component of a heating oil quote.

The same decomposition applies at the pump: on EU fuel prices vs Brent the euro litre price from this page is subtracted from each EU country's pre-tax diesel and petrol price; Germany's October 2026 tax cut, which changes the tax share but not the crude share, is on Germany's fuel tax cut. For UK readers the logic is identical but the currency is not: sterling moves against the dollar on its own, so a pound series would peak on different days; see UK petrol and diesel prices. How crude price changes reach retail prices, and with what lag, is under pass-through effect and the methodology.

This page makes no forecast. It shows what Brent costs in euros and francs, how that compares with every trading day since 4 Jan 1999, and why the dollar headline and the euro bill can tell different stories.

6. Frequently asked questions

What is the Brent price in euros today?
€95.74 a barrel on 3 Nov 2026, converted at the ECB reference rate of 1.1179 dollars per euro; that is 60.2 cents/l or €60.22 per 100 litres. October 2026 averaged €110.64 (own calculation).
What is the Brent price in Swiss francs?
CHF 87.76 a barrel on 3 Nov 2026, via the ECB rates of 1.1179 USD/EUR and 0.9166 CHF/EUR; CHF 0.55 per litre, CHF 55.20 per 100 litres. October 2026 averaged CHF 102.69.
Is the oil price in euros at a record high?
No. The highest Brent price in euros since 1999 was €122.85 on 13 Jun 2022, and the highest month June 2022 at €116.20. The 2026 peak of €120.72 on 2 Oct 2026 is €2.13 lower; October 2026 at €110.64 is the second-highest month.
Why is Brent in euros lower than in 2022 when the dollar price is higher?
Because the euro is stronger. In June 2022 one euro bought 1.0455 dollars; on the 2026 euro peak day it bought 1.1225, 7.4% more. The 2026 dollar peak of $138.21 would have been €132.20 at the 2022 rate, well above the actual 2022 euro peak of €122.85.
How do you convert the oil price into euros and litres?
EIA Brent spot price in dollars ÷ ECB daily reference rate (dollars per euro) = euros per barrel; × ECB rate (francs per euro) = francs per barrel; ÷ 158.987 litres per barrel = price per litre. Only days with both an EIA price and an ECB rate are used; weekly, monthly and yearly values are averages of those days.
What does the euro oil price mean for heating oil?
It is the crude content of the delivered price: €60.22 per 100 litres on 3 Nov 2026 against €38.06 in the week before the war. Refining margin, distribution, taxes and levies come on top, so the heating oil quote is always higher and does not move one for one with crude.
