1. Today's price, and where it comes from
The €188.85 per 100 litres is the national average computed by HeizOel24.at for a 3,000-litre order as of 22 September 2026, 19:40; the table by federal state had not yet been filled in the evening. It is neither an official figure nor an offer: what counts is what the dealer charges for your postcode and quantity on the day you order. In the mountainous west, from Vorarlberg through Tyrol to Salzburg, HeizOel24.at notes that a few cents a litre more are usually to be expected because of the more demanding logistics; the east is supplied from the Schwechat refinery, and middle distillates such as heating oil and diesel have to be imported on top, among others from Burghausen and Ingolstadt in Bavaria.
Three quantities lead from the oil price to the heating oil price, and HeizOel24.at quoted them in the evening as North Sea crude $99.80 a barrel, gasoil $1,452.50 a tonne and the euro at $1.1434. That gasoil rose while crude fell is the signature of the diesel squeeze that has carried heating oil prices across Europe for weeks. 2. What is moving the price today
Two headlines shaped the oil market on 22 September 2026: Iran offered through mediators to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States lifts its blockade (Reuters via Israel Hayom), and Saudi Arabia restarted the East-West pipeline attacked on 13 September at a low rate (OilPrice.com). Both weigh on crude; Brent stood at $99.97 at 17:30 UTC (our API) after $104.33 on 18 September (Fortune). HeizOel24.at sums up the week: heating oil prices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland climbed to new highs for the year by midweek and only eased towards the end; the monthly average across the DACH region is above the war year 2022 and higher than in any September of the past decade.
Against the decline stands the diesel market: Russia extends its diesel export ban to the end of October (Hydrocarbon Processing, 16 September), US distillate stocks are at their lowest September level since 1982 (EnergyNow), and gasoil gained 0.99 per cent in the evening. That is why heating oil falls more slowly than crude. The gap between Austria and Germany is not made by the oil market, which is the same, but by taxes and levies: Austria charges a national CO2 price on heating oil since 2022 on top of mineral oil tax, and VAT is 20 per cent. The price bases are deliberately listed separately (100 litres against 3,000 litres, euros against francs) and are not netted against each other. 4. Order now or wait?
Below a third of a tank: order. The price is high, but it has fallen €2.60 per 100 litres since 18 September and the heating season is starting; a collapse of the Hormuz talks as on 8 July would cost more than a reopening saves in its first days. Between a third and two thirds: a partial order of 1,000 litres smooths the risk, even though the price per litre is higher for a smaller quantity.
