In the 1970s and 2000s, panic: “Oil will soon run out!” Today in the 2020s: the internet forgets, but Peak Oil is real, just not as many think. Truth is subtler: Peak Oil is less “oil runs out” and more “oil production gets weaker.” And that's not equal to Peak Oil, could be “oDemand Peak” (less wanted) not “Supply Peak” (less produced).
Definition: The Hubbert Curve
Marion King Hubbert was a US geophysicist. 1956: he predicted US oil would peak ~1970, then decline. He modeled a symmetric bell curve: rising early, plateau at peak, declining later. Reality: USA peaked 1970 (11M bbl/d), then fell for decades. The logic: if oil is finite and new finds are weaker, total production must eventually decline.
Peak Oil through the decades
1956: Hubbert predicts US peak correctly. 1974: Club of Rome fears global peak by 2000 (wrong). 1980s: Peak Oil worries fade, new fields found (North Sea, Alaska, Mexico). 2003–2008: Peak Oil prophets (Simmons, Kunstler) predict peak 2005–2010 (wrong, production rose until 2018). 2008–2014: US Shale Revolution disproves peak. 2015–2024: global production flats at 102M bbl/d since 2018.
Why Peak Oil is hard to predict
Technology changes everything. Hubbert was right because tech was stable then. New tech changed dynamics: offshore drilling (1970s), deepwater (2000s), fracking (2000s), EOR (future). Peak Oil is real but technologically unpredictable.
What Peak Oil long-term means for your energy costs
Counterintuitive truth: Peak Oil may be LESS relevant than Demand Peak. Supply Peak = less oil available = prices rise = heating costs up. But Demand Peak = world needs less oil (energy transition) = less demand despite less supply = prices fall! Current trend: Demand Peak comes FIRST. Good for your wallet, bad for oil producers.
Action: Demand Peak vs. Supply Peak
- Demand Peak: when does world need less oil? 2030s–2040s? Then prices fall, costs down.
- Stranded Assets: oil fields profitable at 100 USD/bbl fail at 50 USD/bbl. Who bears losses? Risks here.
- Timing: If you install new oil heating 2026 and demand collapses 2035, you're stuck. Heat pumps are safer.
