A roof box is like a parachute, it creates drag. Already at 130 km/h, it raises consumption by 1–2 L/100km. If you don't need it, remove it. Takes 10 minutes and saves €20–60/month.
Step by step
A roof box hugely increases your car's cross-section, like a parachute. Drag rises dramatically with speed (aerodynamics: Cw value). A roof box often increases Cw by 0.15–0.25. At 130 km/h that's ~15% extra energy. At 100 km/h it's 5–7%.
Step by step
- Check Your Box Type and MountSee your car manual or look at the roof: how is it attached? (bolts, clamps, rails?) Get the right tools (usually just wrench or screwdriver).
- Remove Roof Racks (If Possible)Some boxes sit on removable racks. Take off the racks first, then the box. Cleaner drag reduction without the rails.
- Protect Mounting PointsWhere bolts were, water can leak in. Use protective caps or silicone covers (~€5) to prevent rust.
- Find StorageBoxes take space, a basement or garage is ideal. If not, use a cover or tarp to shield from UV.
- Plan When to RemoveTake it off before long trips without luggage, or when kids don't need the space. Saves continuously from removal date.
