A roof box is like a parachute, it creates drag. Already at 130 km/h, it raises consumption by 1–2 L/100km. If you don't need it, remove it. Takes 10 minutes and saves €20–60/month.

Step by step

A roof box hugely increases your car's cross-section, like a parachute. Drag rises dramatically with speed (aerodynamics: Cw value). A roof box often increases Cw by 0.15–0.25. At 130 km/h that's ~15% extra energy. At 100 km/h it's 5–7%.

Step by step

  1. Check Your Box Type and MountSee your car manual or look at the roof: how is it attached? (bolts, clamps, rails?) Get the right tools (usually just wrench or screwdriver).
  2. Remove Roof Racks (If Possible)Some boxes sit on removable racks. Take off the racks first, then the box. Cleaner drag reduction without the rails.
  3. Protect Mounting PointsWhere bolts were, water can leak in. Use protective caps or silicone covers (~€5) to prevent rust.
  4. Find StorageBoxes take space, a basement or garage is ideal. If not, use a cover or tarp to shield from UV.
  5. Plan When to RemoveTake it off before long trips without luggage, or when kids don't need the space. Saves continuously from removal date.

Worked example

Before: Martin drives regularly 120 km/h with roof box: 6.5 L/100km, 1,200 km/month = 78 L × €1.75 = €136.50/month
After: Roof box removed, consumption drops to 5.6 L/100km (-13.8%): 1,200 km/month = 67.2 L × €1.75 = €117.60/month. Saves €18.90/month = €226.80/year

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the roof box myself or do I need a shop?
DIY is totally doable (10 min). You just need a wrench and screwdriver. A shop would charge €50–100 labor.
Will the car rust under the box?
Not under the box itself. But mounting points can rust if water pools. Use protective caps or silicone.
Can I put the box back on for vacation?
Yes, no problem. Remounting takes 10 min too. If you vacation often, weigh: fuel savings vs. remounting effort.
How do I combine this with other tips?
Effects stack: the more tips applied, the higher the saving up to a cap.
